The Project of 2015

Кварцевый песок

Quartz sand of the Zhuravliniy Log deposit has the limiting grain size of 5mm. Quartz sands vary in grain size; it is planned to produce the following sand fractions: (2.5–5.0); (0.2–2.5); (0.2–1.25); (0.2–0.63); (0.63–2.5).

Mineralogical composition

Visual analysis through binocular microscope testified that the sand was of light grayish-yellow color. It mainly consisted of white, transparent, smoky, ferruginous and clouded quartz grains. The grains are irregular with oval, smooth contour; sharp-edged fragments are present in small amounts. The sand volume and certain quartzitic parts there are ore minerals: ilmenite, rutile, magnetite, hematite. Most quartz grains have kaolinite coating. The sands contain certain isometric grains of albite and microcline, agglomerated and tabular kaolinite, scales of different micaceous minerals, minute quantity of tourmaline, rutile and sphen, single grains of apatite and disthene. Some quartz grains possess cavities, as it seems from feldspathic minerals.

Quartz sand in production of ceramics and construction materials

According to the State Standard GOST 8736 the quartz sand of the Zhuravliniy Log deposit is qualified as medium sand of the second class, but it contains a considerable amount of silt and clay particles and has high water demand, as a result of which it is inadequate for production of heavy concrete. Thanks to the absence of coarse particles it can be used for production of mortars and dry mortars. The presence of fine particle fraction in the sand increases the water demand of mortar mixes, but at the same time does not have a negative effect on the mortar properties. Even when the water-cement ratio between adhesion and base, the strength of the mortar made from this sand does not decline, it is probably related to the consolidation of such mortars.

Fine fraction contained in the sand at the rate of 5 per cent may be used as a full or partial substitution of the filler. Moreover, due to the fact that fine fraction retains water well, the consumption of cellulose ester may be reduced. It leads to cutting the production costs of dry mortars. Light-grey color, high strength of grains, environmental stability, resistance to effect of chemicals and high flow constitute only a part of the list of sand properties, predetermining its usage in construction materials and production of ceramics.

Mineral quartz filler (quartz powder) has a high color index: L* CIELAB value (ISO 787/1) (C/2°) is 87 per cent.

The quartz line is designed to produce mineral quartz filler through grinding of quartz sand. It is planned to produce three brand marks of quartz powder: QPZL-100 (quartz powder Zhuravliniy Log, QPZL); QPZL-80 (QPZL-80); QPZL-40 (QPZL-40). The numerical value in the trade name refers to the maximum size of the quartz powder particles.

Quartz powder. Sphere of application

  • As a part of mixture for production of fiberglass.
  • As filler (up to 60 per cent) composing acid resistant quartzous silicofluorine cement.
  • In glutinous mortar mixes up to 10–12 per cent depending on the class of the glue.
  • As filler (90–95 per cent) composing cement-free filler paste on the basis of polymer binder in combination with ground limestone (10 per cent) or metakaolin Zhuravliniy Log MRZL (5 per cent), that provides required remolding effort and plasticity of the ready filler-paste, no crack formation when hardening, high strength of adhesion between the filer paste and the base at minimum percentage (1.5 per cent) of the polymer binder.
  • • In the production of self-compacting concretes as microfiller for stability of concretes to segregation and water gain.
